Job Description

The UM’s National Center for Computational Hydroscience and Engineering (NCCHE) is seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Associate with experience in Computational Hydroscience, Environmental Engineering, Applied Earth Science, and/or Remote Sensing and Geospatial Technology. This is a 1-year appointment and involves working with faculty members and research scientists on research projects related to applying remote sensing and GIS and related spatial techniques to environmental modeling and assessment for water, coastal, ecological, agricultural, natural disasters and public health applications; Impacts of land cover land use and climate changes on water quantity and quality, ecological and public health and aquatic ecosystems sustainability; Developing decision support tools for different water, coastal, ecological, agricultural, natural disasters and public health applications to improve decision-making and environmental sustainability.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

• Environmental data analysis, particularly in the use of satellite remote sensing data and climate and weather data assimilation for these purposes.
• Empirical and/or numerical modeling for physical environmental applications such as watershed, hydrodynamic and atmospheric applications.
• Scientific programming, statistical programming (such as R, Python, SAS), spatial analysis methods (i.e. Geographic Information Systems (GIS)) and satellite remote sensing.

Required Qualifications:

Education:
• Ph.D. in Civil/Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Atmospheric Science, Earth Science, or a closely related discipline. The PhD degree should be already received or about to be received at the end of the current semester.

Experience:

• Experience in empirical and/or numerical modeling for environmental applications
• Experience in remote sensing and GIS environmental applications.
• Experience in writing peer-reviewed scientific publications.
• Experience in scientific programming.
• Experience in writing scientific grant proposals is preferred.
• Experience in web development is preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills (both technical and non-technical).
• Strong geospatial analysis skills are required, including advanced abilities in use of Geographic Information Systems.
• Strong scientific programming skills (e.g., FORTRAN, Python, R).

Definition of Class
This position ensures that departmental web site is updated as needed and functioning efficiently. The incumbent creates web page content, designs web graphics and layout, updates calendars and events, and ensures security of on-line applications.

 

This is a position in which the incumbent works closely with Principal Investigators and their designee to design, code, compile, test, document, and implement programs for web-based decision support systems.

Examples of Work Performed
Designs, develops, and implements web-based UI/UX that are effective, visually appealing, and intuitive.
Creates design concepts, mock-ups, and wireframes for new requirements and converts them to working modules.
Develops decision support modules that interact with various databases, geospatial servers, and various geospatial data layers.
Takes ownership of tasks from inception to implementation.
Builds interactive, responsive websites and apps using HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript within a web framework with sensitivity to user-system interaction.
Develops web applications incorporating geospatial frameworks and datasets.
Incorporates 3rd-party libraries into the software development process.
Performs code testing for quality assurance.
Implements client-server data communication into web applications.
Monitors website use, and runs performance analysis on related products.
Stays up-to-date with the latest web trends, techniques and technologies. Makes recommendations to management regarding updates and changes in technology.
Develops, maintains, and manages codes in a collaborative environment using a distributed version control system, and adhere to standard coding practices.
Works independently to achieve project goals while closely coordinating within the development team.
Performs similar or related duties as assigned or required.
Essential Functions

Coordinates the information flow and user interface of departmental web sites.
Coordinates the web-site content, graphics, and supporting software for the departmental web site.
Utilizes databases to ensure efficient use of departmental web sites.
Evaluates web and graphic software to ensure web site reaches its potential as a marketing tool.
Minimum Education/Experience
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

 

Preferred Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university.

 

AND

Experience:
One (1) year of experience related to the above described duties.
