Aim

Identification of factors causing the fast erosion of the Vistula River bed in the City of Warsaw which causes considerable concern for the infrastructure (harbours, water intakes, bank protections, etc.) and floods.

Motivation

During the last 70 years the Vistula River bed was eroded about 2m. Although extensively debated in hydroscience circles, no definite conclusion could be reached about the possible causes of this erosion. It is expected that modern, physically-based state-of-the-art numerical modeling combined with historical data can shed light on this controversial issue and, help to design mitigation measures.

Study Area

The selected study area is a 6km-long reach of lower Vistula River (the longest Polish river), with 61 groins and dikes built on both sides.

Field Measurements

None. Full set of data is available since 1951. Water gauge data for the last 200 years is also available.

Numerical Simulations

CCHE1D : Modeling of the Vistula in Warsaw for computing flow and sediment transport.

CCHE2D : May also be used.
